Introduction

 

Launched in 2016 the Visa Developer Platform continues to explode in growth, accelerating to 6 billion API calls per month from 3.5 billion this time in 2022. The portal is the face of Visa’s digital-first strategy and is comprised of a developer portal, community platform, API gateway, and service components used to enhance product and client experiences.

With an integrated sandbox and OpenAPI 3.0 support, VDP allows clients to move fast and test end to end solutions with multiple APIs, accelerating the onboarding process and reducing time to market. Our API reference provides detailed specifications, sample requests and responses, and test payloads to ensure that our developers have the details they need for seamless integration. The Developer Portal also offers a dedicated production support team and an actively managed Community platform, which assists clients with operational and production issues during implementation.

Best Community Spotlight & Support

The Visa Developer Community features blog posts and tutorials from internal subject matter experts on our latest products and services. These are showcased across the Visa Developer Platform as well as our monthly newsletter. Our internal product leads, developers, and support staff are active community members that our clients can actively engage with for support and general discussion. One of our most valuable opportunities to engage with our community of users is through the Visa Developer Surveys where we give our users the opportunity to provide us direct feedback on their experience with the platform and us as a company. This feedback directly influences our roadmap as we try to address the needs of our users. We continue to offer new events and engagement opportunities to foster an environment where folks feel respected and heard by us.

Best Visual Design

Over the past year our portal has received accolades and shoutouts from a variety of reviewers. Accolades from podcast hosts to last year’s judges celebrate the portal’s ability to orient our users and direct them to where they want to go. Our visual design places an emphasis on accessibility and usability while providing a stimulating look and feel. Visuals serve a greater purpose than showcasing the artistic ability of our designers -- they are a core part of the user experience. Consistent styling across the portal and careful use of visuals to reduce the cognitive burden on our users can be seen across the Home Page, API Reference, and Product Discovery pages.

Best Use of Analytics in DevPortal

At Visa, we leverage a variety of analytic tools and user research methodologies to gather quantitative and qualitative data that helps guide our product development. Analytics and survey tools are built into our content pages, Community platform, API dashboard, and gateway. We analyze this data to identify and remediate the gaps that reside within our portal experience. For example, we’ve designed a usability score that analyzes API specifications and measures it against a set of criteria for what we consider to be acceptable. A new product isn’t permitted to onboard onto the platform unless it receives a passing score. The team leverages Google Analytics to study our users’ journey through the portal and community platform. By understanding these flows, we can identify gaps in site navigation to ensure that our users are able to seamlessly find the content and products they are looking for. Lastly, we monitor asset usage to better understand the developer tools that our clients are finding valuable, or not so valuable, during their implementation. A strong indicator of the impact of our analyses can be seen in the significant increase in our platform’s NPS where we’ve seen consistent growth and a 50% jump this past year. These are clear signs that we’re addressing our customers’ pain points without the need for them to vocalize the issue directly but instead using analytics to form hypotheses that we can test against.
